Hi we are travelling down from CAirns to Sydney, where we will be for New Year. Any recommendations in the Queensland area for Christmas?

Do the hostels tend to do anything special, or is it treated like any other day?

Your hostel might not do anything special but most restaurants will do a special Christmas lunch or dinner. Often you have to book for these, to ensure a table (and for the restaurant's catering purposes, to get amounts of food right!)

Otherwise, maybe do a great Aussie Christmas - hole up on the beach at dusk, grill some seafood on a portable BBQ, lots of drinks etc. Couldn't think of a better way to do Christmas, specially up north where it will be really humid (not roast and pudding weather)!

I will be doing the same route as you and will be spending Christmas somewhere along the gold coast. A beach BBQ with pavlova for pud seems to be a fairly aussie thing to do. Thats what i'm hoping for! Apparently on Bondi Beach up to 40,000 people visit on Christmas Day (international people mainly though). Id prefer fewer amount of people, but its an option.

I once spend christmas travelling along the east coast and it turned out to be one of the best ever. Me and some people I was travelling with at the time arrived in a little town off the beaten track (it was then anyway), called Agnes Waters/Town of 1777 on the 22nd of Dec. intending to stay at Banana backpackers for one night and then head on. Not only the hostel turned out to be one of the best I ever stayed at (small, cozy, clean, friendly) but also the owners made a huge effort to make all the travellers to have a wonderful christmas experience away from home. They put up a large table on christmas day, decorated it with palm leaves filled with sweats and we all (around 25 people) had christmas lunch with lots of punch together and went to the beach later on south. There, one of the guys working at the hostel was giving surfing lessons and we had such a great time Boxing day they had organized a snorkelling/diving trip to Lady Musgrove Island close by and again I spend an amazing day under/on the water.
If you get a chance to go you definitely should check it out ;)!
