Hi Everyone,

Hoping you can help me. Im looking to travel around Nz and Australia for about 4/5 months and also maybe do thailand and few other places aswell but will be spending majority of the time in NZ and Australia.

Just a quick question, im wondering if any of you have any idea how much money i will need. I dont need to include the ticket prices for like flights as inherited some money which is going to pay for that.

Im hoping to travel for 6 months and thinking of going from Oct 08 to March 09.

If anyone can help that would be great as im trying to work out how much im gonna have to save monthly etc and cant seem to figure it out.

Thanks in Adavance

I spent £3800 in 3 months in Australia - this was eating in hostels most of the time and staying in dorms, but I did several tours as I was travelling alone, and spent around £120 on internal flights. I didn't really go out partying & didn't spend much on beer so factor this in if you do intend on doing this! New Zealand is a little cheaper, and at the moment the NZ$ is weak against the £ - around $2.9 - so your £ will go a long way.

Staying in small (four-bed) dorms in YHA hostels (usually not the cheapest kind), bussing to the next destination about once every five days, buying supermarket food and cooking my own meals, I spent an average of $50 (NZD) per day in New Zealand, and $60 (AUD) per day in Australia. (Australia was more expensive both because everything there is slightly more expensive, and because the distances are larger, which leads to more expensive transport.)
Add lots of money above that if you want to do any activities such as tours, skydiving, bungy jumping etc., and the same for going out partying at night.
