Where I'm at now the internet has uploading/downloading limits so I'm unable to do either. If I start a thread or post a reply to one, is this uploading/downloading something? I'm also interested in knowing the same about PMing and blogging on TP. I understand that adding photos and videos to my blog would be uploading, just wondering about a solely typed post. I've never had to worry about this kind of thing before so I don't really know the difference. Thanks for the help. (And for those who are interested I made it safely to Ireland and am getting all settled in now.)

Every page on the internet you view, every email you receive, every instant message you receive is "downloading", in that you are receiving information. Likewise every post you make, every email you send, every photo you upload, every instant message you send is "uploading", in that you are generating information and sending this out.
However, the amount of data in these activities is very small (5-100 kilobyte), whereas for example a video file on youtube would be 1-5 megabyte (which is 10-50 times as large as a 100 kilobyte webpage).

You don't say what kind of limits you're suffering under, but I assume this is an ISP setting a "cap" on the amount of bandwidth you're allowed to generate before they throttle the speed (that's the most common scenario). Regular use of the internet, which includes emailing, blogging, reading forums, sending private messages etc, should never ever be able to get you above the bandwidth limit, which I've never seen to be less than 1 gigabyte per month (which would be enough to view ten thousand large webpages), and which usually is at least five to ten times larger.

Such limits are really only designed to stop people from downloading complete movies (700 megabytes and up) with p2p software.

Hey Wonkerer,

That's weird - Ive never come across that here before. Where are you? Dublin?

Pay no attention to those Dubs! Get your behind on down here to Limerick! ;)

(Sorry, I can't be of any actual help here, other than being a smart-ass)

it depends where you are, most internet cafes shouldn`t have caps, some of the student ones in the center had caps and you can barely do anything, they`re also really slow !!! you might be better off checking out large cafes or using a friends computer

I know it's wierd. I think it has to do with having satellite internet so they have limits and once they go over those the internet shuts down for the month. I'm going to guess, bassed on what Sander said, that since I'm allowed to email, then I should be allowed to post a typed blog entry, or a pm, or a general post, seeing as those would be about the same size. Does that sound right? I do plan to go to an internet cafe some too, but that means I have to get off the mountain and that won't generally happen unless I have a day off Wouldn't mind getting to Limerick if there's a couch to crash on;) Thanks for the help!
