Do it on your own Pink ;)

Part of the fun surrounding a trip is the research involved and the satisfaction in knowing you did it all on your own :)

As Mel said, with travel agents you will be set up in a certain type of accommodation where you may not really meet many backpackers. Everything will have that "wrapped up nicely with a bow" feel to it which is nice, but it never really delivers.

Even though it might seem daunting, you can actually accomplish it all yourself with a bit of work for a lot less money with much better results in the end. I'd say make a start on looking for a cheap flight. Give yourself plenty of time to research various airlines (always check out on-line fares - they're the best). Once you book a flight, then start looking at accommodation. A good place to start is in The Lonely Planet or ROugh Guides- they recommend everything from basic hostels up to four star hotels, and they rarely disappoint.

After that, you can start googling various tours and things to do in the city or place that you are visiting.

Baby steps and it all just comes together. ;)
