Nationwide Flex Account Problems!

Hey all,

I heard about the Nationwide Flex account and that it gave free withdrawals abroad. So I went in the other week to set an account up before I go away in January.

Everything went find and they said I'd recive the card and pin within a week.

Card arrived and its a bloody useless 'Cash Card' which you can only take out money from a CIRRUS machine.

No use to me whatsoever, I don't understand why I've been issued this or they didn't warn me about it when I was filling in all the forms.

I asked for a Visa Debit card so I could actually use it abroad.

Not sure what to do now as I've called them up and they just told me to check my credit rating with Experian a third party credit company.

I'm 21 have various HSBC accounts (for over 5 years) and an Egg Credit card none of these have ever been overdrawn or any bad credit history atall.

Just wondering how people who have recommended setting up a Flex account found the experience?

Any advice on how to sort this out would be much appreciated as I'd love to make use of the benefits from a Flex account :)

CIRRUS is an interbank network, not a bank. Most banks around the world are connected to two of the world's biggest interbank networks, CIRRUS and PLUS. CIRRUS is managed by MasterCard, while PLUS is by VISA. So if your ATM card is CIRRUS or PLUS enabled, then you could withdraw money from practically almost any ATMs in the world.

hi, I set up my account and had no problems at all.

then I tried to have my wife added but as she was not on the electoral register all they could offer her was the cash card and they would have to downgrade my account.

I wasn't happy with that at all.

They then suggested that if we applied together there would be no problem getting it and so we did. Problem solved. The way banks operate is plain mad sometimes.

Perhaps ask for an account with no overdraft facility as this seemed to be the underlying issue we had. I had a healthy 5 figure sum in there so I found it crazy that they were making it so difficult but I figured it was worth persevering with given the obvious advantages of free wihdrawals. 6 months worth will probably fair add up.
