I am leaving in 6 weeks to travel for a year (or more). However, I won't visit Brazil until 5 months into my trip. Since visas are only valid for 90 days (for US citizens), is it possible to get a Brazilian visa abroad?

I have found the following on another travel forum:

"I have a US Passport and got a Brasilian visa in La Paz in 12/06... They are very thorough about the paperwork, I had to provide them with a copy of my return ticket to the states (they didn't so much care about travel in and out of Brazil), yellow fever vaccination, proof of sufficient funds, a passport-sized photo and and of course the $100US fee. They wanted copies to retain of all the above, so best to spend some time with a photocopy machine before heading over to fill out the paperwork. Still, be prepared for multiple trips to and fro as you have to take a form & have it validated by the bank of Brasil when you pay the $100 fee. It took my half a day of running around to get everything in order, then it was a 3 day wait in La Paz."

I think this is probably going to be the case no matter where you apply.

Thanks, that's very helpful. I figured it would take time, I just needed to know it was possible. The Brazilian embassy website says that your visa must be from your country of origin, so I'm glad there are other options.
