This is going to another one of those "how much?" questions. Sorry.

Going to the USA in December/Janruary. I'll be staying with friends for about six weeks and really don't know what to budget for "living" expenses. I'd like to contribute something to hosts for having me. Whats resonable? I'm expecting to have about $4000 saved by the time I get there. It seems like it should be plenty including sightseeing, nights out and a roadtrip, but I don't know.

Any thoughts from people who've done this sort of thing before?

Instead of "paying" them as such, you could contribute to daily life in their household in some way - cook meals every so often, offer to do the grocery run, help out around the house, take every out for dinner/to the movies or something. They'll appreciate this and probably feel more comfortable accepting gestures than money. And have a gift to give them at the end of your stay, something thats destinctly your country
