The above answer is true for a lot of Malaysians.
So, yeah, Singapore for me.
Turkey
Its Nepal for me
Its quite close to my home town, just 30 miles. when i was in college, many a times i cycled my way to Nepal crossing the border with ease as Indians do not require visa to visit Nepal
Ahhh it was so nice, used to have a good time at the casinos, bars and girls

Nepal is lovely, except for the Maoist agitation which is creating problems these days
Plenty of cheap accomodation is available in Kathmandu and Pokhara, so i dont think that would be a problem for ur friend
Cheers

Well, born in the Netherlands, but just a few kilometers from Belgium, so I guess it is Belgium...can't remember
The first time I went abroad I went to - Germany!
I'm not kidding. Back in 1989 there were two Germanies - East and West, divided by the Iron Curtain. I was East German and as such travelling abroad was very rare. People were not allowed to travel to Western Europe at all and only a select few got to see Poland, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Russia, China and Romania. Quite a few people died trying to cross the Iron Curtain. This all changed when the Berlin Wall came down on Nov 9th 1989 (best day of my live in retrospect ). East Germans were finally allowed to travel to Western Germany and sample the decadent capitalist lifestyle there.
So when Christmas came up my parents took me and my siblings across the border for the shopping trip of our lifetime. It was like stepping into a magic wonderland because I had never before seen so many glitzy things to buy. I can only compare this to Westerner who travels to North Korea or Belarus - the shock could not have been greater.
