Hi Guys

Any help info would be so much appreciated,

Im hoping to travel to Oz with a friend who has a criminal conviction for GBH they spent 11 months in prison for this, what’s the likely hood of getting a Visa??

I suppose it would depend on how long ago his conviction was. If he's only just got out of prison well he's probably not got a very good chance, but if he's been out of prison for 30 years and done nothing else wrong well then they would look at it in a far lighter way.

I'm certainly no expert in this, but I guess all he can do is try his luck if he wants to come. If he turned up without letting them know in the beginning about his conviction, he has a good chance of getting sent packing on the next plane back home. Australian immigrations officers are up there with the USA for the ones that don't care if they send you packing on the next flight home after spending thousands to get to the border with all your good intentions in mind. Goodluck!

Hope its your friend and not you!!

You have no chance but to lie. If they get caught, it is an offence and they will be deported. They will not get a visa (guaranteed), and if they declare that they have crim convic. there is no chance of getting in.

Only thing to do is go with someone else, or lie...and hope they get through....but if they get they go on the next flight, with a long ban on returning...ever!

Good luck....I'd probably try and enter somewhere else where it is easie:):)r...(maybe NZ??? Easier to travel through Aus.)

it would probably also depend on the type of visa as they might be more lenient if your friend just intends to visit on a short holiday than they would be if applying for a longer term visa. I think its best to tell the truth because australian immigration are pretty stringent - I got a right grilling when i arrived at Darwin airport - in the end the only thing they found on me was a pack of raisins, which were promptly confiscated! But if I had had anything to hide, they would have sussed it I'm sure. It's just not worth trying to pull the wool over immigration's eyes in my opinion.

Thanks for the info, well he’s going to try and get a visa as have read up about it and hopefully there is a small possibility its only small fee and the worse they can say is no and if they do we will miss Oz and il go it another time without him! Thanks!
