Driving from Darwin to Cairns will take you about 3 long days or 4 more relaxing days, still it is a very long drive.
Another option is flying, which only takes about 2 hours.
Also from Ayers Rock it is about 3-4 days, avoiding driving in the dark.

You could go on an organised trip to Ayers Rock, Kings Canyon etc which you can arrange from your hostel in Darwin - you will be sleeping under the start in swags for roughly a week and where you end up at the end of it is up to you - you can defo fly from Alice Springs to Cairns and if you book in advance it's quite cheap and a much better option than driving that route (life is too short!) there will be plent of other chances to drive in Oz especially down the east coast :)

www.webjet.com.au will get you the best deal for your flight :)

Happy travels
