My son and I hope to fly to and from san diego to spend 22 to 27th december .

We are from Ireland , my Son is a trainee pilot off for a few days and I am going over to join him.

Any advice on resorts or Hotels to go to or should we tour?

Does everything close down on Christmas Day or not?

Appreciate any advice .

You will be able to eat and drink on Christmas day.

I assume you'll want to stay near where you son is. If he's at Coronado north Island, there are a slew of hotels there, from the expensive and world famous Hotel Del Coronado (where Some Like It Hot and Stunt Man were filmed) to several cheaper places nearby. Coronado offers a few easy sights. You can take the 910 bus south along the Silver Strand beach, get the view for a couple of dollars. If the weather's nice, you can get off at the State park and walk around, even walk south into Imperial Beach where you can catch the bus back, maybe have a beer or two at the Plank Inn, a place sure to be remembered, even by Irishmen.

The northbound 910 runs across the Coronado bridge...quite an amazing view of the bay and harbor and aircraft carriers and downtown, then into downtown, including the Imperial transfer station where you can catch a trolley to Mission Valley or south as far as the Mexico crossing (if you corss, you can count on a long wait to get back at that time of year).

I reall recommend the little park at the North end of Orange...where you can catch a ferry across to downtown for like three dollars. A great harbor tour for cheap and the other end lets you off right by the Star of India maritime museum and a block or two from an aircraft carrier you can tour. If you son's in the Navy, don't miss it.

Other than that, SD is mostly about beaches. I'd redommend La Jolla for the high class end of things, with a lovely walk from the Cove south past Children's pool along the tidepools.
Ocean Beach has a cafe with good chowder out on the pier over the surfers.

Check all places in advance for Christmas day, but you won't go hungry. If nothing else, Denny's is open 365 days a year :)

Enjoy your trip
