I am about 6 months away from a trip through South America. I just got back from 8 months in thailand.

I want to go to every country (except maybe venezuela).

Yea.. I guess I am crazy but I am going to do it anyway. Any advice?

I'm just about to exactly the same thing. I'm flying to Brazil solo at the end of the month and plan to travel all the way from Brazil to Ecuador and then from Panama to Mexico. Sometimes I think I've lost my mind (especially as I don't speak any Spanish -yet and I'm a girl) but hey, I figure that like SE Asia there is a large network of hostels and things sound relatively cheap and easy so I'm bound to run into many other travellers doing same sort of thing. Personally, I think that the pre-departure anxiety just means that the trip will be even more aweome than you can imagine!!!

E-mail me next month if you want any advice from 'the road'.

Chastral, why not Venezuela, it is a nice country and people are very friendly.

Skodaqueen, when I was in Brazil, in the hostel's restaurant all people spoke only english, neither portuguese nor spanish; and the same happened when I was hostels in central america. My english was not very well, then communication with my room-mate was difficult, nevertheless I learned a lot of them.

Good luck

Hi Chastral,

Some suggestions for Argentina:

- Obviously, Buenos Aires. you will need at least a week here. Make sure to check out Recoleta, La Boca, San Telmo (if possible on Sunday) and downtown

- Iguazu. 3 days for the waterfalls. right at the border with Brazil, so you can continue your trip through that country.

- Salta, Quebrada de Humahuaca, Train to the Clouds, Salinas Grandes. Wonderful coloured mountains, beautiful culture and breathtaking scenery. 6-7 days

- El Calafate (Perito Moreno Glacier) and Glaciers National Park (4 days)

- Ushuaia. 4 days for checking out the Tierra del Fuego National Park...

Have fun!

I now live in Lima, but plan to "hit the road" soon too. Orginally from Houston, then to Bulgaria, now to Lima. I too am a single female traveller and want to see the rest of South America. Let me know when you plan to be in the Peru area; feel free to contact me. I am interested in Chile and Argentina and would be happy to trave with someone for awhile.
