Hi,

I get to Hong Kong airport on 17th Jan @ around 7.30pm I was wondering whether we would be best going straight to Kowloon for our first night stay. as after reading up this seems to be the main place to stay. If so any recommendations, tips or advice.

Cheers
Jay

You don't mention how long or where you are staying after this first night. Hong Kong island and Kowloon (mainland) are together a pretty small place so I'd recommend going to where ever you're staying.

I have stayed at both the YMCA and Hotel Kowloon. If you can get a good rate (I got $90 US), go to the Hotel Kowloon, it is on top of the metro. YMCA was lacking big in the consierge department and tried to overcarge us. On the flip side, the room was bigger.

Hey there,

I just spent a few days in Hong Kong on part of a larger trip and we stayed at the star guest house:
http://www.starguesthouse.com.hk/

They are right in the heart of Kowloon, in the Tsim Tsa Tsui area, where i highly recommend staying. it is where all the buzz is, all the shopping, and it feels like the real hong kong. my local friend said it is the "times square" equivalent. The Mrt goes everywhere, so i would head straight there.

This guest house wasn't deluxe but it was clean, safe, airconditioned, run by friendly people, and a very reasonable price.

both HK island and Kowloon has plenty of places to stay. It really depends on your budget. The main nightlife is in lan kwai fong which is at HK island... but Kowloon has plenty of shopping and eating spots that open till midnight.
