hi all! wondering if anyone had any information on the best way to travel south from buenos aires (or maybe santiago) to southern patagonia region? I am on a really tight budget and it all seems very expensive... but i really want to go! is it worth the money? will it be very expensive once down there as well? what are the highlights? and how do i get there cheaply?

anybody who could tell me anything would be very much appreciated!

Patagonia is awesome. The geography of the place is outstanding - mountains, oceans, wind-swept plains and glaciers. I quite enjoyed my trip down there.

Word of caution - bring layers! It gets surprisingly cold there, even in summer. The temperature may be reading 15C, but because of the wind it feels much colder.

As for how to getting there, there is a lot of distance between Buenos Aires and Patagonia. Buses take a long time. When I was down there I bought a ticket to fly from Rio Gallegos to Buenos Aires for $150 (taxes included). That was 1-way. Not sure what round-trip would have cost.

I took the Navimag ferry down into Patagonia from Pto. Montt. That was a good 4 day trip, but it cost $300+. If you are going on the cheap, might not be the way to go. Plus you still would need to get yourself to Pto. Montt.

No idea on cost of buses.

it is a shame not to go to patagonia when you are in argentina.
i understand there are financial problems but i know that stimes you can get round to it with little What is worse is when you dont have time and you must do it by plane. that is really expensive.!!!
cant help much with chile but what i think people should do is
Bs As Peninsula de Valdez 1/2 nights.
P.de Valdez Rio Gallegos and to the glaciers. 1 night
glaciers by plane to Ushuaia. 3 nights
there are places for 20 doll the night. probably cheaper. but i dont know much about them and in fact i dont like being crowded in a room.
food is quite affordable in all Argentina.
in two everything especially accom is cheaper.
then after ushuaia plane again, no option to go to a place in the lake distric argentina or swhere in chile.

people can travel a lot in Argentina now.
dont miss that chance you have. you will not regret it.
there is a programme given by Aerolineas Argentina called VISITE ARGENTINA . check the combinations you can make. and trust me.
you wont regret it.
