You get many guesthouses here. Now i am in Baan Sabai in Soi Rambutri. 450 baht per night with aircond, double bed, private bath and hot shower. There is a cheaper inn (Sawasdee Smile Inn also in Soi Rambutri). But the room is quite small with aircond, private bath, Tv and a so called double bed. You can also try Green House at Rambutri Road. Khaosan might be a little bit noisy at night compare to Rambutri. And there is no BTS or Subway reaching this area.

Lonely planet has reviewed a selection. You can find at:

http://hotels.lonelyplanet.com/hotel/?SearchDetails=G!-1!-1!4586!2156!-1!-1!-1!-1!!!&PreviousSearchId=-1&TargetHotelId=-1&SubmitDates=False&VAError=-2147483648&IsSubmit=False

I stayed at the Viengtai, which is one street over from Khao San. Clean, has a pool, and I think air cond as well, but the place doesn't have a whole lot of character. You could probably pick up something cheaper and less Westernised, but I get it depends on your taste, comfort preferences and your budget. Just be aware that not all places have air cond and that it can be very welcome in the soupy heat of Bangkok.

Thai people are great, you'll have a blast. Just keep your wits about you, particularly when dealing with taxi drivers etc and you'll be fine.

Enjoy the trip

Hello Marcusshaw:)

Here is a link where u can look at some photos of the accomodation on the Khao San Road and also u can prebook on the link.
www.khaosanroad.com
However I dont recommend that u prebook. Accomodation is easy to get on the Khao San Road and costs less if u dont prebook.

For tips about Thailand I think u will have to ask more specific questions.
U can also read the contents of this link to get more info.

I'm a huge fan of Erawan House over on Soi Rambutri (one block over from Khao San) behind the temple. Erawan House 2 is much pricier so make sure you find the other one if you want to check it out. For a nice place to stay with a touch of luxury I thought it unmatched in the area at the price. it was about 600 baht.

Rambuttri Village Inn was pretty good last time I stayed there on Soi Rambuttri, one street up from Khao San Road. I think itstarted at 290 Baht for a fan single room or 390 with aircon, but it was a while since I was there so the price may have gone up.

They have their own website:
