Hello everyone,

I am heading to Egypt in Janurary 10th -17th 2008, we are doing a tour, an organized tour for 7 days, venturing around Egypt - Cairo, Aswan, Luxor etc, with a two day boat ride on the Nile in a felluca,

I am slightly cautious about Egypts tourist industry, and the threat of becoming sick or being part of a terrorist attack.
Does anyone have any tips or experience they can share?

Thanks alot,
Luke :)

Hey Luke,
Well, about the food and drinks part (risk of getting sick) I would use the usual precautions, that is not eat salads or ice in your drinks for example. Also, try to eat only the really well warmed food and don't eat fish and preferably no meat as well. If you do get sick, apart from pills, a big bottle of coke will be your friend for a while. ;)
Egypt and India, among several others, are probably the worst countries for possible troubles with your stomach etc.

As for the safety part: that's always a gamble and the last couple of years have been relatively peaceful, although mainly along the Sinai coastline towards Israel there have been attacks like you probably know. It is just a matter of waiting for the next one when security is getting less tight again. But also here in general: avoid big crowds like stations, markets and big international hotels.
And, although you have made arrangements for an organized trips, I think that is more risky than travelling by yourself which is perfectly possible in Egypt. It is much easier for terrorists to attack big tourist buses and they prefer to hit lots of people at once instead of killing a couple of tourists on the road.

That said, it is highly unlikely that you will be hit but you can never entirely avoid the risk, just as the risk of being sick. I tried it before in Egypt (see the dirty thread in general talk) but got sick as well.

So don't worry and have fun!
