Depends on how modest you are, how many continental flights you plan to have.
And how much famous and very touristy places you want to visit.
From my experience, normal month in SA when travelling can be done with 1.000 USD monthly.
Some people will tell you that it is not enough, some will say that it is a good budget.
It depends on your habits and wishes. Food and ground transportation are cheap,
but not everywhere. If you are prepared to sleep for 7-14 USD, and eat daily up to 15 USD,
that means - cheap places, modesty and buying food from the stores.
If you like to party and stay in safer places, your daily budget will rise over 50 USD a day.
Not to mention transfers and so on... Then, it can be 2.000 USD monthly.
But, if we say 1.500 monthly, nine months - calculate on your own...
Good luck,

Keep in mind that safety and money are hardly related issues, in the sense that spending more money won't necessarily make your stay any safer. Busses in Argentina, even though prices climb steadily, are still cheap; Mar del Plata can be an expensive destination depending on when exactly you're going and what lifestyle you have, while Iguazu is very affordable, if not cheap. All in all I'd say that USD3000 for 2 months (it IS 2 months we're talking, right?) is plenty.

well, 4.5 months total (August to mid-December), but i'm only actually going to be travelling around for 2.5 months (2 months with a friend)....I figure it will be good to stay with a friend and get my bearings before heading out on my own:)
