Website Links in profile!

Travel Forums System Talk Website Links in profile!

Just thought I would mention that recently we included the opportunity to add website links to your profile. Anyone can do this through your Control Panel - Update profile link.

The actual clickable link will only show to other members if you have a certain number of posts in the forum or if you have photos which are featured but it's a good opportunity for travel businesses to 'advertise' their goods without continuously having their posts edited and deleted :) Oh, and the links are direct links so no redirect code on them like in the forum.

Of course you don't have to have a travel business to enter the link in your profile. It could be a personal website, a friends site etc. etc.

Hi Sam,

Ok that looks nice. So i put in my url (was already there) but it doesn't show in the profile page??

Sam would it be possible to make a automatic footer for messages that are posted in the forums??

Hi George,

Like Sam said, the link will show up once someone has posted enough in the forum. It will also show up if you have had a photo featured!

Re: signatures. We haven't added them yet, because we have decided not to allow promotional links in the forums.. In fact, all those links at the bottom of your posts are pretty fair game

Maybe down the track we'll reconsider, but for now it has only helped to keep spam down to a minimum on the site. We have had people post one liners + a signature as a way of promoting their site. That doesn't serve the forum any purpose, so it's against the rules.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the answer.

I think that for people like me it's important to leafe a small link in our posts. For us this way is a good way to answer posts and get something in return (some small advertisement for our sites).

If you don't mind then i keep putting my links in the posts (you don't have to answer this).

I also belief that most of us don't want to spam a forum because that's also not good for us. specialy if you see someone post in every group in the forum (saw a post yesterday for a datingsite).

George (ok this time without the link)

Hi George,

Yeah, I can see that point. Which is why yours haven't been edited yet. Mind you, we have edited others which were pretty similar.

That's why we are letting these links be displayed in the profile for users with more than 50 posts (I think it's set to 50). Like you say that way there is some reward for posting and unlike the links in the forum, it actually will count for something to search engines as well!

Regarding links to your own site, the preferred way for us is if you put a link to your site when it is relevant to the question. If the user is asking for something that you have an answer to on your site, then it may be useful referring to that answer. Otherwise, those links are pretty fair game to the moderators. I hope you understand.

Cheers, Peter

p.s. you may want to see if you can get listed in our links directory as well if you want to promote your site. :)

Hi Peter,

Ok i will watch my url postings (but not stop them completely).

I just send out an email to get listed to your linksection (thought i did that already but i didn't) thanks for the reminder.

Then i was wondering something else. Do you offer the forum to other webpages? I would love to have this forum at my site as extra service to my visitors.

Do you need more moderators?

Hi George,

It's not yet possible to use our forum on other sites. The whole thing is built into Travellerspoint very tightly and it would be tricky sorting out how to deal with users, etc.

We do need more moderators. There is a minimum post count of 100 at the moment for moderators, but we'd definitely be interested in having a few more! Once you're at 100, just let me know and I'll set you up :)

hi Sam,

I have over 30 postings. I would like to know if I can leave my website url in posting like Georgep. The links I left to my website were direct links to hotels which answered the questions of other members. I didn't leave my website link in all my postings, just those which were asking about a hotel in a specific city at a certain price or certain place. However all these links to my site have been deleted.

what can I do so some links will remain to my site like georgep ?
when I am above 50 postings will you allow a general link to my main site as signature like georgep does?

thanks for the information

Hi Janzw,

Once you hit 50 posts, your website will appear in your profile as a direct link. As Pete mentioned, if your website can assist someone with their question then feel free to add the direct link to that page that can. If it is a hotel booking website you will probably notice the links will generally get edited or deleted, just because there is no need in that case to link off site (we run three accommodation booking engines here on Travellerspoint too with most of the same information). A website link in a 'signature' is also generally deleted if it doesn't serve to answer the posters question. That is the same in georgep's case by the way....

Yes, I know we're strict... but it keeps this an informational forum which is something that a lot of forums end up losing otherwise.
