if you fly from Cancun to Cuba and if you have a few days to spend in Mexico go to Chichan Itcha.
Cuba depends where you go.
all inclusive?
then you have maybe only a few days to spend in Havana,close(5-6hrs)bus trip away is Vinales,a really beautyful small village, absolut worth to visit.
if you have more time the small city of Trinidad is also a very nice place to visit.
Accommodations are more or less $ 20 for a double insuite room.
you dont need to book in advance, you will be awaited by locals at the bus terminal
showing you photos of the room they have to rent and you can deal with them.
dont worry,it is very easy.

Thanks for the tips! I will be backpacking and plan to spend 3 weeks in Mexico and 10 days (ish) in Cuba.

I have lived and travelled extensively in Mexico over the last year. If you need some help with planning just send me a PM when you get a chance. I will also be making my way through Mexico to CA in Feb/Mar
best of luck

P.S. Best recomendation: Study a bit of Spanish before going, if you havent already. English is not spoken in the best places in Mexico, and you will be rewarded for your efforts with a chance to meet great people and experience their culture

are you taking the plane from mexico city or cancun over to Cuba?

if you do it from Cancun, there are plenty of places where you will have great times!

In the most touristic places there is no need to speak Spanish as all or most of the people speak English...

Try Chichen Itza, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres...

If you are coming from MC to Cancun by road, try to stop at different places, Veracruz is wonderful! Tabasco too.

In Cuba there are many places where you can stay for less than 20 USD, but hotels good hotels charge anything from 10 to 50, 100 usd check at sol y son, before going, I dont recomment going by road in Cuba...

Hi Claire,
Did Cuba and Yucatan back in April 2005, and the weather was hot and sunny in both.
In Cuba we did Havana (of course), Santa Clara for Che's mausoleum, Trinidid (Playa Ancon nearby for beaching), Vinales and Cayo Levisa as a day trip from Vinales. Hired scooter in Vinales and hooned around the countryside for the day (got well and truly lost and our Spanish was and still is non-existent except for the ability to ask for a cervesa or a mojito).
I would recommend Vinales and Cayo Levisa, Trinidad/Playa Ancon as places in Cuba not to miss.

Yucatan - we used Playa Del Carmen as our base for daytrips to Cozumel and Tulum (hired scooter for the day to get there and back and that was fun). We used Cancun as our base for Isla Mujeres and Chichen Itza.
Tulum was lovely, right on the beach and there seemed to be reasonably inexpensive beach accomodation just south of Tulum.
Bussed from Cancun to Chichen Itza and stayed overnight so we could be first in the gates the next day before the tour buses arrived. I had El Castillo (The Castle) all to myself (photo in profile).
There is a regular and cheap bus between Cancun's bus station and the airport.
When we flew in from Havana we bussed straight from the airport to Cancun bus station and changed for the bus to Playa Del Carmen. That didn't take very long at all and we were on the beach ASAP.
I would recommend Tulum, Isla Mujeres and Chichen Itza as places not to miss if you are in Yucatan.

I see you like the Gili islands. Have been there three times and always stay at Kontiki on Gili Meno. Lotus-eating at it's best.
