Just found this website....I'm travelling to Aus next year, for a year. I haven't made any plans as yet but would like some tips. Is is reasonably safe for women to travel alone? Is it easy to meet people even when you're shy? I probably won't be heading over until May and I'm going into their winter so anywhere I should start off? I have contacts in Melbourne and people I can stay with there so might start in Melbourne and go on from there but was thinking would be nice to see some warm weather if possible. Is it easy to get work? I travelled around Italy last year with a friend and loved it, gave me the travel bug. Any tips would be greatly appreciated :)

Aussie is an incredibly easy, friendly and safe place to be travelling as a solo female :) I spent several months there in 2007. Melbourne is a great place, but it certainly does get colder winter weather compared to almost everywhere else except Tasmania! However, if you have contacts there, it might be nice to start your travels there and settle in a little. You could go up the coast to chase the warm weather - Surfers Paradise or even up as far Cairns. Work is pretty easy to come by, the Harvest trail is happening all year round in various parts of the country, call centres/door knocking companies are ALWAYS recruiting in the bigger cities, and if you sit your RSA certificate you'll find bar work easily. Look on, this is a site for finding part-time/casual employment in Aussie. Good luck, and any more questions feel free to PM me

Thanks for your reply :)

Maybe I'll start in Melbourne say hi to my friends and move up towards Surfers paridise or further up. Good to hear work is easy enough to come by, I'll have a bit saved up but will need to work to travel around I think...hopnig I will be able to crash at a couple of places so that should save me a little in living costs. I'll probably PM you when I have made some more solid plans, thanks :)

Where else have you travelled to? Where do you plan to go? It's so exciting making plans to go travelling, some of my friends are all settled down and I can't imagine doing that just yet!
