We are heading to Arenal, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio at the end of January. Does anyone have experience driving in Costa Rica? We have rented a car and I assume that it will be ok since these are very touristy areas, but hear that driving in CR can be a challenge.

Any advice is appreciated!

I am from Costa Rica and this past weekend I was driving Arenal, Monteverde and other areas. The streets are in perfect conditions and all major touristic areas are well marked and you will find signal all the way long. You can request a street map -just in case- or ask for a car with a GPS device and the local streets loaded. If you want to take other routes, it will be advisable to ask for a 4x4 car - even a small 4x4 will be enough.

Maybe the major challenge here is the lack of proper labels on the streets and avenues; our address "system" is based on stores, boulevars, drugstores, etc etc... it is very unique...jejeje.. but a mess for the tourism. You will be fine, you can always ask to somebody in a store for an address.

Have a nice trip and enjoy our country!!!!
