I will be moving to London in a month for possibly a 6-12 month stay, and I doubt I can survive that long without playing the game I love - basketball.
I realise it is not a hugely popular sport in the UK, but I was wondering if anybody would know of any local leagues/competitions that I could possibly join while I'm there? Are there many indoor sporting centres in the city that provide for basketball games?
I would also like to know if gyms a popular throughout London? I don't want to have to travel 30 minutes just to go to the gym! :)

Yes, there are basketball leagues etc, although i don't know any specifics off the top of my head. 30mins and googling will probably give you enough info to start with (or at least somebody to contact). I can suggest trying the - urm - Westway centre???. Can't remember what it's called, but it's a large sports centre under the main road at westway near the BBC TV studios. Would guess the closest tube to be Latimer Road. If you look on a map, there's a short spur of (was) motorway from Shepherd's Bush and a roundabout at the top, it's under there.

Theres quite a few indoor sports centres etc where you can play, and there are hundreds of gyms, although in some areas many may have long waiting lists &/or be extremely expensive. Finding a cheap one with space may be a little harder, but is certainly possible.

A mate of mine used to play at Victoria, I think it was on Vauxhall Bridge Road, called the Quuens Mothers Sports Centre or something like that - about a 5 min walk from Victoria tube down towards Pimlico.

Crystal Palace NSC is a major venue for competitions as well as training, enjoy your stay, if there are any more thoughts or questions on anything get back to me, I will be away from tomorrow for two weeks until 9th September after that I'll be here. I've been to Cairns, Adelaide and Perth to visit family a few times and will be happy to reciprocate with advice or help when you are here.
