I'm getting the trans-siberian through Mongolia to China, I'll then be travelling down to HK then flying onto NZ so won't really be in China for long, maybe a week max as need to get to NZ for a certain date. I'm from the UK - do I need to organise a visa from here or Russia or do they do visa on arrival?

Hi Mumba

My husband and I are planning a similar trip - well the Trans-Mongolion railway bit :)

I have been doing some research and came across this site which might be useful to you:

According to the above site it looks like we'll need

A tourist visa, or L class, is a visa issued to travelers who intend to visit a country for the purpose of tourism or to visit family and friends for a limited period of time.

Hope this is of some help to you

Mimi :)

Sam - you'll need to organise a visa in advance. It is indeed Visa L that you need, it costs £30 unless you go for the 'same day processing' option.

Check out:

Note that unless you pay a visa processing company to do it for you, you have to turn up in person - London, Manchester or Edinburgh are your options - all the info is on the site given above.

Hi mumba.

I too am travelling to China soon. This is the reply I got from the Chinese Embassy in the UK today.

Quoting Chinese Embassy Email

You can apply 3 months in advance. For tourist visa, the applicants need to submit a completed application form (which can be downloaded from the website: with a passport standard photo affixed and their passport. For those who hold a non –European country’s passport, they must show us either their valid UK visa or the valid immigration stamp at the airport. It normally takes 3 working days to process the visa and the fee for a single entry visa for British citizens is 30 pounds, 65 pounds for Americans and 20 pounds for other nationals. The next service is also available and the fee for it is 15 pounds extra. For the same day service, the applicants need to pay 20 pounds extra and they have to come here very early. Normally those coming here at half past eight can get the same day service. But we can't guarantee that they can get it since things are changing from day to day. For collection, either the applicant or someone else has to come back to pick it up since we don’t have post service. The collection time for the same day service is 11:30am to 12:00noon.
