I know there has been quiet a few messages about taking laptops away backpacking (which i think is a crazy idea), but i was wondering if anyone has every taken a Portable DVD player.

I am thinking of taking a light weight one, for the long haul flights and the days that we want to chill in the hostels.

What are your thoughts.

Personally I think its unnecessary - one more thing to lose or break and take up valuable pack space. Long-haul flights will have recent films (movies, for you americanised folk ;)), most airlines give you a choice of about 10, plus TV shows and maybe even computer games. Lots of hostels have DVD rooms, plus once you're travelling I reckon you'll find you don't want to spend that much time watching DVDs!

I once brought one with me, and the battery died in the middle of a film.. The battery was fully loaded, but it might just have been my DVD player.. I don't think they are worth the extra baggage when you can just bring a good book or watch the inflight entertainment.

bringing a laptop makes more sense to me than bringing a dvd player. I don't bring either....a book or a deck of playing cards is just as much fun and a lot easier to carry around
