I was wondering if anyone has taken the high speed train to Kyoto from Tokyo. How long did it take to get there? was the train usually on time? I have heard there are sometimes delays, as it is quite common for people to be committing suicide on or in front of the trains. I plan on travelling back from Kyoto to Tokyo to take a flight, so I need to know about any possible delays anyone has experienced.

I took the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka and that took two hours, so I would guess Tokyo to Kyoto would take maybe another fifteen minutes.

I used trains quite a bit in Japan and I found them to be exceptionally punctual - it was quite common to see a member of rail staff looking at his watch before blowing his whistle at the precise second to give the driver the signal to leave. In fact on one occasion I knew my train left at a specific time but I wasn't entirely certain which platform it left from, but there was only one train leaving at the time mine left so I got on that one, such was my faith in the punctuality of the service.

It takes abt 2 hrs 20 mins to reach Tokyo from Kyoto. I have been travelling quite a lot on Shinkansen during my vacation in Japan last year and the train is very punctual. I know that I will miss the train if I were to be late for 1 or 2 minutes. If you are travelling using the Japan Railpass, I would recommend you to make seat reservation since there is no additional charge.

The trains--shinkansen- are very punctual. You can depend on that for punctuality. Also you don't need to worry about as the frequency as you will have a train every hour.

If possible take a return flight from Osaka to your country( instead of returning to Tokyo all the way) as Kyoto is nearer to osaka. On weekends if you happen to travel advance reservation is advisable.

so go ahead.
