I m planning a trip in south america in april for about two months. Departure in buenos aires to santiago (chile) - lima- la paz - salta - iguacu - rio - buenos aires. We were planning to rent a car but after several months search, it appears to be impossible to rent a car that allows you to cross thoses borders (peru,bolivia,paraguay,...)
We want to do the trip by car and not by bus. Does anyone know a agency who allows that????????
If not we found one who allows chile, uruguay and brasil. what about using it from buenos aeres peruvian border (passing by santiago). let the car there. cross border by bus. and rent a car in peru. do you know a agency who does peru AND Bolivia? then cross bolivian border by bus to salta. And from there the use the first company again for salta -buenos aires by iguacu and rio. I know it makes it realy complicate but what can I do else???
thanks for your help...

ps: we are still looking for others people to join us, do no hesitate to contqct me for further details...

Hey Ludo,

I don't want to rain on your parade, but I think you better give up. The rental agencies I know are all reluctant to let you cross the border in their vehicles, and usually only allow you to do so in return for a staggering insurance fee. Peru and Bolivia are considered particularly uninsurable, due to the high risk of burglary that foreign cars run there.

It may be easier buying a car in Argentina, use it to drive around, and sell it (in Argentina again, to avoid taxation). We have some threads on the subject, but I seem to remember that is a feasible solution.
