Has anyone ever taken a sleeper bus in Vietnam before? If so, what are they like? How comfortable are they? Also, how safe are your backpacks? Any other information about sleeper buses would be appreciated. Cheers.

In Vietnam now there are some name of buses with sleeper berth such as: Hoang Long bus, Hung Thanh bus...In general, it's suitalble for traveller and comfortable enough. All of them are new bus so you can use them.

I used the sleeper bus a few times - its slightly more expensive than the normal tourist bus. The beds are ok bit short but ok and pretty comfy.

I actually would recommend one of the lower berths or bunks, basically l did the Hue to Hanoi trip and was first on the bus so grabbed the back seat where its like a big double bed - this was great for a bit then the bus stopped off and picked up a load of locals along the way and as there is nothing separating you l had to lie with some stranger snoring in my ear and flinging their arms about!!

Also as you are higer up you tend to feel every pot hole more and you bounce much more!!

So yes the sleeper buses are good and decent condition with a blanket and pillow and relatively comfortable!

I think in all countries all over the world the "opportunist thief" is everywhere. I think the sleeper buses are in general fine but you should always be on your guard! I'm sure you will here good stories and bad stories in general it's best to use common sence and stay safe. Happy travels

I agree with Purdy.
I also used a sleeper bus last year from Hue to Hanoi. I used a bed right at the back as they were totaly flat aswell. Don't expect a great night sleep though! Right at the back on the top bunk you do bounce around and does keeps you awake abit. The driver beeping is horn every two seconds is worse though! At the end of the day its better than your back acheing all night and all you wana do is rest it. I would recomend it and your pack should be fine under the coach just keep an eye out when you have a stop off.

I took the sleeper bus and it was okay (but I see what you mean about the driver constantly beeping his horn). The backpackers where I booked it though told me it would have bunks, but it turned out that there were no bunks and you were sleeping in two seats right next to a stranger which was a bit weird, but overall it wasn't too bad.

But anyway, cheers for the advice everyone.
