Hi there

I already have a flex account which I am planning to use as my money pit while we are away travelling. I just wanted to see if anyone had any experiences of their card being blocked whilst overseas?

My sister works for a bank and said that sometimes they can block your card if you keep taking cash out of ATM's whilst travelling.. for obvious reasons. I understand it's quite a good idea to tell your bank you are going away and there could be a number of withdrawals from random countries over a period of time, but she tells me sometimes they still can block a withdrawal because it is too risky to completely remove any security from you account just in case it does get stolen.

I just wondered if anyone had any experience of this and what they did to overcome it?

Hi Sophie,

Nationwide does not block any oversees transactions. The only time they block a transaction is if it seems 'suspicious' to them and out of character for how you have been withdrawing or purchasing.

All we did before we left was call Nationwide and told them how long we were going away for and asked them not to block any transactions or withdrawals. They noted full worldwide travel for both our cards and we haven't had a problem at all. Just remember if your cards are going to expire while you are away report them as damaged and get Nationwide to send you new ones before you leave.

i used mine around Asia for 18 months with no problems. I then didn't touch my account for 18 months, then made a lot of withdrawals in a short space of time in Tanzania, and i had no problems. It might be worth telling them you are travelling around the world though.
