Hey everyone...I'm a 30yr old US male visiting Argentina and maybe Uruguay in April. I'm in the military and have a 2week leave so thought I'd go somewhere new. I speak pretty good Spanish and will be coming alone. Any ideas on places to stay--i'm looking at something mid-range or budget but in a fun part of town. Any ideas on nightlife? I heard going to Uruguay might be an interesting option as well for a couple days...any input would be great! Thanks..

As a local I'm glad that you choose my city, BA, to visit. There are so many option to have fun in BA that any reccommendation will be not complete. But don't worry, you will find soon enough info when you will arrive here. Anyway some info, mainly about accommodation, you can see in alink in my profile.

From BA there are several ships a day to Uruguay. Colonia is the nearest point (3 hours ship), a nice small place to visit in just one day.

You point Tacuarembó in the map... Why? there is nothing there!
And the tale that the tango singer Carlos Gardel born there is a lie.

It's better to go East, by the coast: After Montevideo (big grey city I think you just need to stop to change buses) there are many good places like Punta del Este (fashion, expensive) or Punta del Diablo, an small fishermen town with nice beaches, good to relax a couple of days.

In case you need more info, don't hesitate in asking me by private email.

You should Considere to go to some Polo matches played at the Campo Argentino de Polo in Palermo between March 26th and April 15th...
Dedicate 1 day for Colonia and 1 Sunday for feria de Mataderos too... it´s a fast approach to gaucho´s dance, food and music.
