With one month I suggest you visit the northeast of Argentina and south of Brazil, nothing more nothing less.

Possible route could be Buenos Aires - Uruguay - Iguazu Falls - Pantanal (Campo Grande) and on to the coast to Rio. You need about one month for that.

Excellent, feasible suggestion Michael. Here's another one:

Northwestern Argentina
Buenos Aires - Mendoza - La Rioja/Catamarca - Tucuman - Salta - Santiago del Estero (or, if you feel adventurous, Resistencia) - Santa Fe - Buenos Aires

Certainly doable in a month; more smaller stops can easily be included. Also, you could cross northern Argentina west to east (dusty, hot route, but very interesting) and include Iguazu.

Check to see if you need a travel visa to enter Brazil.

I am from Brazil so I can help you in this one. If you have one month I would recommend spending most of it in Argentina. Obviously as you didnt mention your transportation way (plane or bus) I will assume you pretend to use both... I would start in Buenos Aires, Argentina, so that you dont get stressed. Buenos Aires is a beautiful city. Spend 4 days there, and move by plane or Bus, in this case you will be 20h in it, to Bariloche. Its a fun place, great hostel and a lot of fun... From there I would by Bus visit the lake region and sleep in small town of Villa Angostura and San Martin (both reachable by bus). Ski is the best thing to do in this three citys... You will spend in this four cities something about 12 days (or less if you go by plane). I would go and see Pucón (Chile) for some other world landscape... Then you could fly to Rio de Janeiro, and maybe Recife because its all you must see from Brazil...
As an alternative, I would recommend something more exciting.. In June I will go with some friends by Car from Curitiba (BRAZIL) into Argentina and head to Mendonza, cross the Andes mountains by car into Chile, viña del Mar, valparaiso and Santiago. Then head down to Pucón from where we start our way back going through San Martin, Buenos Aires and Uruguay...
This will take 20 days and you could copy my itinerary

Sorry for my bad english...
