Have a look at their website. They are based on capacity building through long term support of skilled professionals in developing countries. Something like that is ever that easy. Its quite well explained there.

Maybe someone has already suggested this - I didnt read through the entire thread - but I would recommend the Niall Mellon project in South Africa.

Niall is an Irish self-made millionaire who took his money to South Africa and set up a volunteer project building houses for poverty stricken families over there. In order to be a volunteer, you are required to raise a substantial amount of money to contribute to the project, but it sounds like most rewarding experience. I would really really love to take part in this, and I hope to at some point in the future.

The reports I have heard back from it are that the volunteers have an amazing time out there, there is a great social life built around the project, but they are very strict in the sense that if you turn up late or hungover to work, you're on the first plane out of there. So, it's a serious commitment, but it sounds wonderful.

For me, the appeal would like in the fact that there's a manual aspect to the work - you are actually helping to build someone else's home. How rewarding is that!

It would be great to get more posts on this thread with organizations that did require you to pay them to volunteer.
