ok so i was getting all excited about our RTW trip we planed for May 2009 and then i got talking to someone who did East Coast Aus, Thailand and NZ for a year and spend much more than i have planned on taking with me...

im now a little worried that i wont have enough. ill list where we plan on going so you can see what you reckon. its a year trip in all and my RTW ticket is £1,200, this is included in my saved price of £5,000.

Very rough guide so far

India (4 days)
Singapore (3 days)
Thailand (3 weeks)
Vietnam (3 weeks)
MAYBE - Cambodia or Laos
Australia.. plan on buying a car and driving around all of it. Also have a working visa so that will help with costs. (8 months)
NZ (1 month)
Fiji (3 weeks)
Cook Islands (1 week)
L.A, San Fran & Vegas (2 1/2 weeks)

i have £5,000 budgeted for this, for a car in Aus (split 3 ways), and to hire a car in NZ for the month (again split 3 ways)

would be really grateful for all your views on this... im starting to worry i dont have enough!!

thanks for taking the time to read

I know you're planning on working in Oz.. but I went travelling for like 5 Months and spent £5000 and that wasn't including my airfare. Fair enough I did do alot of things but I did do it on a budget staying in hostels, cooking for myself, lots of partying, excursions, camper in Nz etc.. But I only had a month in Oz and a month in Nz.. plus a week on the cooks & a few days in LA and these are the places your money is gonna disappear super quick and you seem to be spending the majority of your time in the more expensive countries.

I would really consider adding a couple of extra £1000 on that if you wanna make the most of your time away.

If you need anymore help, let me know, happy planning :)

Thanks for your reply!

When i went last time i spent a grand a month in Aus... but i wasnt working so had to occupy myself all day... which meant money!!

Its kinda not what i wanna hear but im starting to realise its the truth! Starting to worry now as i have alot of debt to pay off before i can even start to save!!!

Thanks again

I'm in exactly the same position.. I had a fair amount of debt to pay off and am still going, but the end is in sight and I've paid off most of that in the last five months by gettin a second job & working as much as poss.. it really is possible if you commit fully to it & its such a good feeling when you can cut up another credit card!

I know it probably seems impossible at the mo but hang on in there, definitely try & find a second job if you can it really does make a difference as you can use that as your disposable cash to live on then all other wages can go towards paying off & eventually saving!!

Good luck & as I said of you need any more help just let me know :)

Thanks alot. i hope it all works for you too! aint life a bitch in this country lol

hummmm, You've got me worried now too!!

I have budgeted about £5000-£6500 for my RTW adventure doing the following route:

USA (NY - 5 days, San Fran - 4 days, LA - 3 Days, Northern Mexico - 4 days, San Diego - 4 days)
Fiji - 2 weeks
NZ - 3 weeks
OZ - 3 Months (working whilst i am there, and living with friends and family)
Indonesia - 1/2 months
singapore - 1 weeks
maylasia - 2 weeks
thailand and islands - 6 weeks
Vietnam - 3 weeks
Loas - 2 weeks
Cambodia - 2 weeks
Home :(

We decided to go this way around so that we can get the expensive places 'out the way', and once we land in Asia we can stay there as long as we still have money. Have you considered doing it this way?

Only 68 days to go!! woohoo

Funny you should say that actually coz we wanted to do the cheap places first so that we dont overspend to start with, then at least when we get to the expensive places we will watch our budget more!

im assuming its for a year too? seems like you have more time in the cheaper places so you might be ok... mine is the other way around!!

68 days!! wish i was that close to going!! do you have a second job? maybe that could top up the cash if you dont think youll have enough?

Im going to the following places on 30July

Thailand 12.571 weeks
OZ 7.714 weeks
NZ 3.854 weeks
Fiji 16 days
Los Angeles 10 days
New York 8 days

Flights £1,856.00
Visa £20.00
Oz bus ticket £350.00
Fiji travel ticket £350.00
NZ bus ticket £350.00
USA travel ticket £700.00

I have about £2000 left and plan on earning another £1000 or just above in thailand and oz. This should be able to fund a £20 a day budget in thailand. oz and nz travel costs are paid for (bus down the coast) Fiji is about £460 for 12 days that includes travel, accomodation, food and activities. NY i plan on staying with a mate for a bit

I dont mind staying in £2 hostels in thailand, i will need to cross the thai border 3 time though as i am there for 88 days instead of the 28 the visa allows (so ive heard) this will be asked in another thread

hope this helps

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Your budget seems about right cause you have the most expensive areas covered i.e. working & staying with fam & mates in Oz.

It never hurts to have a little more tho, just for unexpected occasions!!

Have a wicked trip, take care

Thanks Alex... gives me a little insight into what other people plan on taking with them.... its hard to know whether i will have enough... it all comes down to factors that i can only work out whilst im away... ie jobs, cost of fuel etc.

Thanks for all the comments.... maybe the credit card will need to be used at some point!
