I am heading up the East coast next week for a few weeks in a campervan.

Starting in Cairns and working my way down to Sydney. Can anyone recommend where is the best place to see the Reef?

Everyone keeps saying that Cairns is overpriced and crowded - and I have been reading about places round Capricorn Coast - especially Lady Musgrove Island and this sounds like a pretty cool place to see the reef too?

Is it worth doing a spot of snorkelling at both? Or should I save my money till I hit Whitsundays and Capricorn?

Any help appreciated!

I found further north in the Port Douglas and Cairns area was better than the Whitsundays for coral and reef life.

It cost about $60 for a day snorkelling trip with lunch included to the outer reef from Cairns and about $80 for a snorkelling trip with lunch in the Whitsundays in July 2007.

I reckon if it's warm and sunny then jump in, when it's cloudy things don't look so vibrant underwater.
