I need advice and help with my route!!

I'm going to La Fortuna, Monteverde, San Juan del Sur, and Ometepe Island in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. I'll be starting in Costa Rica traveling north. In what order should I travel?

Originally I was planning on going from Monteverde to Rivas to get to San Juan or Ometepe but I can't figure out how to connect using the Lonely Planet. How would I get from Monteverde to Nicaragua? Do I need to go back to San Jose?

I'd appreciate any information about my route. Thanks!:)

It depends a bit from where you start. From San Jose you might want to go to La Fortuna first, then drive around lake Arenal and via Tilaran connect to Monteverde. From Monteverde you can drive (carefully or with 4x4) via Santa Elena to Juntas and the interamerican highway, direction Liberia. Once you are in Nicaragua and insist on seeing San Juan del Sur, this would be a first turn-off to the Pacific. Return by the same road and join Rivas, from where to flip to San jorge and take a ferry to Omotepe. Always ask for public bus service stops/connections. On short distances taxis are inexpensive. (Rivas - San Jorge) No point of taking a car across to Ometepe: what you can't master by (inexpensive and folcloristic) public transport, you can walk.
There are verious ways as to how to tackle these itineraries, but a rental car cannot pass the border from Costa Rica to Nicaragua. If you rent a car, find out as to where to leave it in Liberia. Public buses, various choices, are plentiful available and at reasonable prices.
It's a nice trip !

Thank you! I will be starting from San Jose. I plan on taking buses during my trip. I would only consider renting a car if it were an emergency.
