We plan to visit my husband's homeland in Bratislava in June. I wanted to know if there was enough to see and do for a week. If there is not, does anyone have a suggestion from experience to let me know if it would be wise to visit Prague or Vienna for the majority of the trip. I would like to know on average what it would cost US dollar compared to the Euro. I keep hearing how expensive, but I am not sure if they mean an average family meal is $20 or $100. I want to be prepared and even if I have to bring snacks in my suitcase. Thanks for any help.

Don't worry. Eastern Europe is cheap. You can eat for 4 euro (abt 6 US$?) per person easily. I am sure cheaper then your homecountry anyways. Have fun. And welcome on travellerspoint;).

Hello and welcome to TP:)

One week in Bratislava is quite a long time.

I would recommend u to spend a couple of days in Bratislava and spend at least 3 days in Vienna, its really worth it. Also Vienna is so close to Bratislava(around 80kms) so transportation would not be a problem for u.

We will love Vienna if ur interest lies in museums n palaces. Variety of museums are to be found all over the city. While in Vienna u can buy the 72 hour integrated transport card which cost around 13.50 Euros

A week is a long time for Bratislava. I would definitely visit either Vienna or Prague for a few days-- both cities have much more to do and see. Vienna does have more fascinating museums, but is more expensive than Prague (and Prague has a certain charm). In any case, either city is worth at least a few days' visit.

As for the money, I wouldn't worry about it at all; food is quite inexpensive both in Bratislava and in Prague, moreso than the States or western Europe.

Have a great trip! It's a beautiful part of the world. :)

Id say dont go to Vienna, its nice but REALLY expensive. If you do maybe a day trip - 10 euro return ticket.
Spend ur time in Slovakia if your going to see ur husbands homeland. I loved Bratislava and thought a day or two more wud have been great! Travel to the nearby villages and castles. I went to see Elizabeth Bathory's castle in Cathice and id say its amazing, worth the trip. Its only 1.5 hours by train and a nice walk up the mountains to the castle.

Slovakia is really cheap - average meal (1 adult) about 3 euros.
pint of beer - 1 euro

Vienna meal is about 12 euros
Pint of beer - 3-4 euros

OH another idea: You can also head east to Levoca and from there get to Spisky Nova a small village host to the largest castle iv ever seen - Spisky Hrad! My point is - a week in Slovakia sounds great!

Do Vienna another time. Its not value for money like Slovakia is.
