Could anyone shed some light on the best possible route to take, and any sights i might want to see on the way. i am also trying to do it on a shoe string budget;)

Route 1:

Travel to Arica (Bus or Plane) and then take a bus to La Paz. (Road is the 2 highest on earth and not the best one... be prepared for a long, not much comfortable trip)

Route 2:

Travel to San Pedro de Atacama and from there cross the border and the following Uyuni Salt Lake to Uyuni town. From there you can take a train or bus to La Paz (Trains are only once a week)

This one might be more expensive as the Salt lake cross is not the cheapest one and should be well organized but believe me, the salt lake is one of the most beutiful and impresive places of south amrica.

If you need more details feel free to contact me.

Have a great day

I took the bus from La Paz to Arica, Chile (5-6 hours, I think). Stayed a few days in Arica, then took the bus from Arica to Santiago (30 hours). Can't remember costs, but it wasn't too expensive. The trip from Arica to Santiago is LONG, so if you have the money you could look into flying (LAN Chile), or break up the journey by making some stops along the way.
