Anyone done any visiting/travelling in Afghanistan? I know its not common (especially the travelling bit) but people do visit, right?

Yes they do. When I was in Peshawar in Pakistan late last year I kept upto date with Afghanistan travel as it might have been an option. Aside from my own travel plans the weather was not good and getting from Herat to Kabul would have been near impossible due to current road conditions.

I had a friend working in Kabul but during my visit to the Khyber pass an expat worker had been kidnapped the day before crossing over the border. I suspect he has actually up to no good. My own circumstances prevented me from crossing as I had trust issues with a few people I was around at the time.

While many people would rightfully advise that it's a no go travel area, it seriously depends on your background, skills and purpose for going there. While no where near as dangerous as the media makes it out to be, it's not the best place for first timer travellers, or those looking for "adventure". Check out Lonely Planets Thorn Tree fo regular postings about the security and people traveling there.

Oh yea, the other thing is your own embassy might not be so happy in giving you a letter of invitation for going there.

All the best
