Hallo All,

I trust all is well today..

I am planning a trip to Asia next year some time - the idea at this stage is to do it for six months, we want to see a few places in Asia like Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, Thaiwan, Malaysia and Indonisia..

The question I have is will six months be long enought!!
Also can anyone give me a estamite of money one should take for this period, I will be going from the UK so the pound should be able to get you far out there ...or not??

Hey there!

Im heading off to SE asia in September so I will have to let you know! I would think it would depend on what kind of lifestyle you want to have for the 6 months?

You could do Asia on $7000 for 6 months, but that would be dirt cheap. If you want to live a little maybe you could double that and add some.

I think you need to break down your trip by country, and research each country separately. There is quite a difference between costs in Taiwan and those in Cambodia. Use google to do this and you will find quite a bit of help. Beware of guidebooks which are not up to date, and know that inflation is alive and well the world over. I saw proof of this recently in SE Asia. It is true that the young can travel/live considerably cheaper than us old folk.

Again, I'm with Daawgon on this. Check exchange rates and find estimates from those having actually been there (and remember) as well as travel guides. They have estimates but it would be prudent to overbudget than cut it close.

I would also suggest that you make a list of how you are willing to commit to live. Do you want A/C? A decent (by western standards) room? Will you eat street food (in abundance and cheap) or prefer to dine in establishments catered to westerners? Where do you plan to visit? How much will it cost to get in? Travel costs?

The more clearly you can answer the questions above, the closer you can get to striking a balanced budget.

In countries like Indonesia, it's best that you utilise your ATM cards with PLUS network rather you change money with the money changer. These people tend to take advantage from tourist. If you are planning to be in Indonesia for a week, roughly u just need 100-150 euro.. that is more than enough unless your looking for a 5 star hotel then. Most of the Indonesian are living poor..some part of the country does not have proper infrastructure.

If Planning to be in Malaysia, it depends where do you like to go.. For example if you visit the Langkawi Island on the nothern peninsular, the hotel rate are cheaper than if you stay at the east coast island like Perhentian Island or Redang Island mainly because Langkawi Island is a duty free zone, so it's cheaper..even compare to Kuala Lumpur...

Currently, the best way to travel between this country in the SEA reagion is to use AirAsia flight service since it's the cheapest around at the moment and they do have a lot of promotions. So do check that out..
