Hi. My parents are thinking of going to Fuerteventura in Feb, but they've heard it is very windy there. How bad is it and are all the Canary islands the same?
If you would still go, any tips would be great too!
Thanks very much.
Phil

Yes, it can be very windy - but it is not to bad.

No, the Canary Islands are not all the same.

I was there a week ago, and it was pretty windy. I did hear that it's windier in the summer than in the winter though.. Fuerteventura has a lot of sand, ie. the sand dunes, so when it gets windy you might get sand everywhere.
I wasn't as impressed with Fuerteventura as I was with Tenerife. Tenerife is a lot greener while Fuerteventura is basically just filled with sand.

Not having been to Fuerteventura l cant comment - but l was in Gran Canaria in April and didnt notice wind at all - there was a breeze at the beach but that was pleasant - the temps were in high 20s c going into the 30s so believe me any breeze was welcome!!

Hi Phil

I have just read that Fuerteventura translates roughly as 'windy island'. :) Also found this link which gives some info about the weather http://www.fuerteventura.com/Weather/index.php

Hia,

I havent been there, but i did go to Playa Blanca in Lanzarote in May/June 07. We could see Fuerteventura from our hotel and it was only 50minute boat away. To be honest we found it extremely Windy and we hardly ever did any sunbathing because are sun beds were nearly blowing over. I would recommend Tenerife i have been to two different parts, for your parents i would recommend Los Gigantes i went in September and it was lovely and Los Gigantes is a lovely quiet area.

Hope this helps.

Each of the Canary Islands are different, with different landscapes, cultural and commercial activities.
Having lived on both Lanzarote and here in Fuerteventura for 3 years I would agree that it is windy, but not unbearable. Fuerteventura is the host to the World Windsurfing Slalom event in July/August every year along its white sandy beaches of Sotovento. The wind also has the benefit of having a cooling effect which means you dont "sweat" in the heat - just remember the rays here are very strong so you MUST use suitable skin protection. For more details see the following page within this site: Fuerteventura Guide. I also have a website providing more lots more information in my profile.
