Has anyone dove in Indonesia yet? I am a new OPEN WATER 1 diver and while I live here, I am trying to select some good places to dive.

Hi there,

I'm not a diver, but I did spend a couple weeks on Gili Trawangan (off Lombok) a few years ago, which was reputed to be a great diving spot!

Have fun!

I did some diving on the north side of Bali back in 04. Very nice!! There was absolutely no-one around either at the time, but that might have had to do with the terrorist bombings a couple of years before.

I don't know which part of Indonesia you are in so I can only give some very general info.
As far as I know, the best dives in Bali are either at Tulamben (the sunken USS Liberty from WW2) or Menjangan Island.
I have snorkelled both spots.
Neither areas are crowded with backpackers/tourists as they are well away from Kuta.
Tulamben is on the NE coast of Bali under Mount Agung (you can still see the lave flows from it's last eruption).
I can recall the snorkelling over USS Liberty didn't have that much marine life (no reef), a distant view of the wreck below and great views of diving teams ascending and descending before my eyes.
Still enjoyed the experience and is classed as a great dive (by reviews).
Spent a coupla days close to Menjangan island in the far NW part of Bali this year. Quite a few Japanese divers at my resort while most European divers hung around hotels long Pemutaran beach.
The snorkelling at Menjangan was awesome (as good as the Gilis if not better) because of the canyon wall.
Spoke to a Scottish diver when snorkelling Menjangan who said it was reasonable but his best ever dives were off Flores from Labuanbajo.
Hope that helps.

P.S. Still looking at snorkelling around Manado in the near future.
