I'm planning to train from Madrid or Barcelona to San Sebastian. I was wondering if anyone knows how far San Sebastian station is from the city? Also, does anyone know the best transport to get to the city?

my tip: Try to get Zaragoza by train (AVE), it is the fastest way either from Barcelona or from Madrid. once there, zaragoza, take the bus (check out - english version available) to Donosti - San Sebastian..

If u're travelling on budget, probably direct bus would be cheaper but also it will take longer.

good luck & enjoy!!

Hi. If no changes, the train station is in the city not far away from the center. Hope someone from SS will give you more information, but I do not remember any trouble to move to the real center. Enjoy is one of the most beautiful cities in the world.... :-)

Try Google Maps for the layout of the city including where the railway station is. Try for train information.

Remember San Sebastian is often marked on signposts as Donostia - San Sebastian. Donostia is the name in Euskera. I've never seen it written just as Donostia, but you never know!

The main railway station (which you will arrive in from Madrid or Barcelona) is slap in the centre of the city, yes, by the river. The narrow guage Euskotren station - which runs along the cast from Hendaye at the border to Bilbao - is maybe 15mins walk further away, next to the bus station. But both are pretty well located for the city.

If going by train from Madird, pick it well. The quickest now only takes 5hours, but allot of them still take well over 7 and there are only 3 or 4 a day direct. Think the fast one is the one that leaves earliest in the morning. Trains from Barcelona take at least 8hours, though some are quicker with a change in Zaragosa.

Both train stations are pretty central. There is an overnight bus from barcelona to san sebastian if you want to save a bit of money. I worked in san seb for a month and its such a great place.
