Hello I am off to India in Oct and want to book up some accommodation before I leave. I am a 26yr old female traveling alone. Need to find a cheap, safe hostel where I can meet people. Can anyone re:)comend any????

Thanks :)

Don't think theres many "hostels" as such, as it's more about cheap hotels in India. One of the bigger tourist areas in Delhi is a place called Paharganj (sp?), theres a few places along the "Main bazaar".

It's fairly gritty (probably like many other areas in Delhi) but a pretty cool place. As the hotels may not have a great social atmosphere, to meet people theres a couple of little bars in the area you might want to try.

The main budget accomodation area is Paharganj, the maze like sprawl right opposite New Delhi Railway Station which looks rather depressing...

there are many budget options here tucked in the small alleys, though some of the options are pretty of the better ones i found while shopping around in Paharganj is the Shailay guesthouse right across the railway station's international tourist buereau, which was pretty good at 300 rs, clean with cable TV but shared baths, and it was convenient enough... i didnt see any other foreigner there though, but it most probably is because i was there in low season...

another thing is be careful of all the "Govt approved" Travel agencies that lie around Paharganj that tout literally will try to drag u into - they are not. Most will try to cheat you - the usual "your hotel is dirty/burnt down/closed/full" scam involving a phone call to an accomplice and the tickets they try to sell u are horribly overpriced - one smartly dressed young man tried to sell me a ticket to Amritsar for 50 USD when it should cost 12....

Book your room before you arrive. Never never go with any 'agent'. Travelling alone in Delhi can invite a lot of unwanted attention.

In my opinion, avoid Pahargamj. Just remember you're single 26yr old female. fair game for many guys, but again for every creep you'll meet a really great guy :) India is strange that way.

Best advise. Do some thorough research on teh net. Get out of the cities as soon as you arrive. Go to Himachal Pradesh, if you prefer the hills or Goa if you prefer the beach. These are the best places for a single gal to travel. Again, be cautious.
Happy journey.
