my husband and i are planning to take the 7 and 8 year old backpacking in bali in october this year. we would appreciate feedback from people who have done this before, as we are concerned that things that are dead simple as an adult will be tricky with little ones. eg. getting off public transport and then finding appropriate accommodation with hot and bothered litttle ones in tow; can we leave them in their room and hang out in the lounge at night; should we pre-book somewhere for our first few nights; has anyone successfully applied for the 60 day visa (we're from australia).
i am hoping they will find local kids to play with- has this been your experience? any recommendations for good child-friendly places to stay (with pool in hot places if possible)- i speak indonesian, so off the beaten track is fine.
i don't expect all of these questions to be answered, but hopefully it will give you an idea of what's concerning me. (it was so easy when i did it on my own in the eighties and nineties) all feedback appreciated:)

I think you should book your accommodation in advance. I don't know about leaving your kids in the room/hotel while you hang out at night. If you Google for child-friendly hotel in Bali you might get some reviews: I found Klub Kokos, Kajane Mua, and Tjampuhan Hotel in Ubud are child-friendly; I don't know about other areas. If I'm not mistaken, Kamandalu Resort / Maya Ubud / Nikko Bali might provide baby-sitting services.

As far as I know, there are no buses or other mass transportation in Bali. You might want to rent a car, it's cheaper than using taxi. Car rentals are very easy to find in most tourists'/travellers' destination areas.

By the way, if the climate is normal, October will be the start of rainy season.

Sorry I couldn't be of much help.
I hope you'll have a great time in Bali. :)
