Ok, so I arrive in Bangkok on August 13th and want to book a room in advance. I wanted to stay relatively near the Khao San Road area but all the hostels there seem to have only single or twin rooms. Does anybody know of a good hostel in that area with dorm rooms? If not, have you stayed in the Sukhumvit area, should I maybe think about staying there instead? Thanks

The small soi's just off KSR are full of cheap, quiet guesthouses. Take a look and see if any pick your requirements. Some like are just as cheap as a dorm room. I did a quick hostel search and found this one. Maybe it is what you are looking for. Good Luck.

While there are a few hostels in Thailand, generally, dorm rooms are not the norm. Single hotel rooms in Bangkok are cheaper than dorms in most places in the world so travelers tend to opt for single or double rooms. Unless you are arriving in Bangkok very late at night, there really is no reason to book ahead. There are so many places to day, and at that time of year, you'll have no problem finding a room. Many of the cheaper places don't have websites so it's hard to book ahead anyway. I would recommend heading to the Rambutri area, just off of Khao San Road. You will find about 15 budget hotels of similar quality all within a 5 minutes walk. If you do want to book something before hand, and want something slightly nicer than rock bottom budget, then I thought Rambutri Village Inn was ok. Everything I find on the web about this place says its the rudest staff ever though, but that wasn't my experience.

I am paying 120 baht for a single room near KSR.
Well they told me the 100 baht rooms are full for now. I don't think so and that is pissing me off.

75 baht is a dorm room that is in KSR, I mean you would have to go through a small street and find it. Its called MOMA'S or MAMA's, but many hotels have that name. Its in one corner close to the end of KSR, before you find BURGER KING.
Is it a good dorm? I don't know, but I met a japanese and an Aussie who stayed. I've seen the place from the outside and I'll tell get a single room.
