I am planning to drive to Milford Sound soon in my old mazda and to stay there for a day or two. What's the drive like to Milford and what is accommodation like? What do you recommend I do there?

Many thanks

There is no accommodation in Milford Sound.

Well, for some values of no. There's a lodge which exclusively caters to people who just came off the guided walk of the Milford trek, so if you drive there, that's not an option. There's also the possibility to overnight on one of the two boats which cruise into Milford Sound at the end of the day, and then overnight anchored in one of the coves. I actually went on the cheaper of the two, and can highly recommend the experience (if you're lucky enough to get a good day) - but youch, it's expensive.

Unless another option was added recently (I doubt it), that's it.

There's really nothing to do in Milford Sound. It's a large body of water, a building to shelter people while they wait to board their cruise (also selling tickets to the handful of people who drove down themselves and don't have a ticket yet), two or three short walking trails (5-15 minutes; I can highly recommend doing the one to the base of Bowen Falls), and that's it. People arrive by the bus load, board their ship, spend a couple of hours on the water, disembark and stretch their legs for a few minutes, reboard their bus, and leave.

The drive to Milford Sound is spectacular; more spectacular, if you'll forgive me the heresy, than Milford Sound itself. It's also really long, and jam-packed with tour buses. I always recommend people not to drive it themselves, since they'd be stuck behind those buses all the way anyway, and they'd be stopping at all the same stops en route (all of which are worthwhile, but all of which also suffer the constant stream of buses stopping and leaving).

Can I recommend kayaking? It's a great way to see the sound - the day we went we had schools of dolphins playing around the boats.
