I have done the HCMC-Phnom Penh bus trip 5 times. As far as I know, you do have to get off in PP and go up to SR the next day. All the companies that run the HCMC to PP route get in too late to make a connection up to SR. You will get into PP around 4:00pm and the last bus to SR leaves at 2:00pm. But, one travel site said the Mekong Express bus does go from HCMC to SR, stopping in PP for a break. I could not find enough info on this to be sure. I would check with all the companies in HCMC and see who reps for Mekong Express. I have always used the Sinh Cafe bus, affiliated with the Capitol GH boys. This is on De Tham St. I just don't know where you pick up the Mekong Express bus.

Having done this trip, I really recommend you just go to PP, find a cheap room, shower and have dinner. Then go to Martini's, have a few beers and dance with some of the many VN ladies just waiting for a dance partner! The Capitol GH has rooms for $5 and they run buses up to SR daily for $5. I think you will find this much more enjoyable than tryng to do this in a 16 hour slog. Send me a PM if you have questions

thanks guys .... i will look at both options .. the main reason of wanting to head straight to SR is due to me flying out of PP to Vientiane, i figured i didnt need to do PP twice, tho the thought of another 16+ hour bus journey sends a shiver down my spine! .... maybe i'll break up my time in Cambodia, spent a day of 2 in PP then head to SR and spend 2 days exploring Angkor and then roll back to PP to do anything i'd have missed and be ready for my flight.

the joys of travelling alone .... anything's an option!

Dent is correct. There is bus service from HCMC to SR direct, started in May 08.

"Good news for those guests who are planning to visit Siem Riep from Saigon- HCMC
HCMC-Siem Reap bus route to open Monday May 19th 2008.
The Saigon Passenger Transport Company (Sapaco Tourist) will open a bus route between Ho Chi Minh City and Siem Reap Province in neighboring Cambodia next Monday, according to a company source."

"The route will cross the border at Xa Mat in Vietnam’s southern Tay Ninh Province and Trapeang Phlong in Cambodia’s Kompong Cham Province. At 500 kilometers in length, the route will reduce travel time by more than two hours, compared with the current route through border towns Moc Bai and Bavet.
The bus will depart at 7 a.m. at 309 Pham Ngu Lao Street in the city’s District 1 and arrive at the Sapaco office at #0667 National-No 6 Reap in Cambodia, with a one-way bus fare costing US$24 per passenger."

Makka, this gives you the option of not hitting PP twice. PP is not my favorite city, but I am sure you will find several days worth of things to see/do. Send me a PM if you want advice on PP nightlife.

Geeeez - widely availible ... way easy to book,.. some places charged $22 ... others $26 ... i ended up pating $24 .. i wasnt sure about paying to little, as im sure weve all leanrt, you get what you pay for!!

travel time should be about 11hours, which is pretty much all ive been use to getting through Vietnam... just pray i have a decent air con system onboard!

yeah actually probably wont have time to explore the local nightlife in either PP or SR ... time restrictions etc ... its a case of when i have a few beers, im not 100% productive, and unfortunatly i dont have the time to 'waste' days shall we say!

thanks tho buddy ;)
