Hi Steve,

I have not been to Santiago myself, but will be there in Jan '09. Anyway, I have met a few people who have and most of them recommended La Casa Roja in Santiago.

Anyway, good luck with the travels!

Hey Steve,

I have stayed in the following 3 hostels in Santiago:

La Chimba in Bellavista - best hotel of the three in terms of facilities and comfort. It only takes about 10 or 12 people so it's really cosy. The owner Ian organises stuff like bbqs and wine tasting in the evenings, and its really more like staying over at someone's house! It's situated ina really lively part of the city.

La Casa Roja - this is a big hostel in an old building down in the Barrio Brazil. There's a good atmosphere here as a LOT of backpackers go through here. The Barrio Brazil is where most of the students in Santiago live and it's also a vibrant area, less noisy at night than Bellavista.

HI Cienfeugo - also situated in the Barrio Brazil, about 10 mins walk from Casa Roja, this is a typical institutional HI, but it's a great spot during the summer. The staff are really helpful and friendly, although the manager of the place is a bit of a d**k.

You can expect to pay between $12-15US a night for each of these places.

Hope that helps!

thanks for the advice, i ended up staying first 2 nights at some place i forget the name which was average in size and i walked in on the maintanence man going through my locker as he had the keys, i then ended up walking round the corner and finding la casa roja so booked in there instead, heaps of people and space to chill, would recomend.
