One useful advice, check out if the local church/diocese offers room/board. A friend's relative booked me a hotel room in Arusha that quoted me $85 USD. I refused and walked out and instead found a perfect nice room for $8 USD at the local arch diocese, breakfast included. Avoid Sokoine road in Arusha, especially after dark.
