My wife and I are planning a RTW trip; probably going to get ONEx 6 cont. and from the looks of it right now the good places to get it and start is New Zealand, Australia, or S. Africa. We'll probably start in mid-August and I'm wondering what route to take (weather wise) and where to start from and what direction E or W. I also need to check on the restrictions of ONEx especially if we start in NZ or AUST b/c the 2 stops would make it difficult as we want to see Aust. Fiji and possibly NZ. Here's where we want to go...

ATL FAA Atlanta [Hartsfield - Jackson Atlanta Intl], GA, US
ATH DAFIF Athens (Spata) [Eleftherios Venizelos Intl], GR
IST DAFIF Istanbul [Atatürk/Yesilköy Intl], TR
DAR DAFIF Dar es Salaam, TZ
KTM DAFIF Kathmandu [Tribhuvan Intl], NP
BKK DAFIF Bangkok [Suvarnabhumi Bangkok Intl], TH
SYD DAFIF Sydney [Kingsford Smith], NSW, AU
NAN DAFIF Nadi [Intl], FJ
LIM DAFIF Lima (Callao) [Jorge Chávez Intl], PE
SCL DAFIF Santiago de Chile [Arturo Merino Benítez Intl (Pudahuel Intl)], CL

This was our route before I realized I could save a lot buying the ONEx somewhere other than US. My preference right now is S Africa and go to SA first (heading W) spend Sept, oct in peru, and patagonia (anyone know weather in patagonia in oct-nov? then Fiji then Aust/NZ be in Thailand by Christmas... only problem then would be Nepal in Jan probably not the best... Greece/Turkey early spring and finish up w/ Africa late spring. Thoughts... suggestions? I'd really love to do some treking in Nepal but maybe it will have to be another trip...

IST to ATH ? Is that all you have planned for Europe? I personally would fly into Istanbul and out of London, travelling over Europe overland. It would be a lot easier to find flights to Africa from London, plus if you want to throw away the last leg of your RTW and return to the USA it will be also be easier and cheaper to do so from London.

Dar es Salaam is best in visited in the Northern hemisphere's summer, say July/August.

I do agree with the Europe overland idea... visit http://www.eurail.com/ as from what I understand you pay one fare for however long you wish to spend there and it covers your train travel across Europe. But I suppose it all depends on how much time you wish to spend in Europe...

I'm concerned about NAN-LIM - don't you have to go via Auckland? I've heard that Lima is not exactly the nicest SA city. Can't you stop in Buenos Aires or Rio?

You're also flying over most of the S. Pacific - what a waste! Fiji is too developed for the likes of me. Couldn't you get to one of the smaller islands (my friends just returned from Fr. Polynesia/Society Islands, and loved it - you should see their photos!)

Be advised that Bangkok city is no gem either - if you could possibly get up to Chiang Mai or into Hanoi, you'd enjoy much more.
