Do you want to spend the whole year in Australia, for a little extra you can get a round the wotld ticket and have planned stop offs on the trip, so you can do something like, UK to USA east coast, west coast, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, west coast, east coast, north coast, Thailand, and home.
Visit your local travel agents, look at travelbag site and others (Travelbag is
Check with expedia and all the other opptions, sometimes a direct approach to BA or the other main stream airlines will get you a better fare if you have a 10-14 day plus or minus option on your travel dates.

Make sure you have copies of all documents available in case the ones you are travelling with get lost or damaged.

Check you arrrangements for getting money while you are there, open an account with a good bank in Australia Westpac, ANZ and Commonwealth - I would recommend an account with one of them then access will be easier especially when travelling around.
You can of course use your UK credit cards - just watch out for the charges back in the UK but it may well be cheaper than the cost of transferring money.
